Hi! Just from my very limited experience with ERP, it is a technique that isn’t supposed to work immediately always. Think about it this way: Before ERP, we would do compulsions and seek reassurance to get IMMEDIATE RELIEF, but we have learned that doing so actually harms us and because we get immediate results, it doesn’t always yield long term benefits. ERP is a solution that will yield long term benefits, so it may not take effect instantly. I have trouble sitting with that truth because i want this to go away and I want that immediate relief. But we have to do ERP so we can be stronger forever instead of stronger until our next episode. Hope this insight helps!
Wow thank you!
I would even go so far as to say that if doing ERP is giving you immediate relief from anxiety every time you do it, you may actually be doing it wrong. Because as you say, the whole point of it is to allow yourself to experience the uncertainty and general unpleasantness.
