Overcoming OCD
Has anyone gotten better without the use of medication? Just curious

Granted my OCD was never severe, I have gotten significantly better since the beginning of my journey with ERP. I don't really have many intense intrusive thoughts anymore, my compulsions are slim to none. It just usually flaires up if I get stressed or anxious now, that's it, ykwim?
@applethinkstoomuch777 i understand! mine has moments where it feels very severe and then the next day i could feel perfectly normal. usually it reaches its peak before my period comes- which is what im dealing with right now, & i really dont want to use medication but sometimes it feels like that's what i need
No medication works on me, so I got over all my mental issues without being on meds.
I have improved immensely without medication. If I ever got to a point where I wasn't functioning I would consider it but I find that the more I learn to tolerate discomfort the better I get, so I try to tolerate the discomfort as best as I can. If it ever becomes too much I will consider medication as a tool but I'm wary of looking at it as a cure.
I overcame my previous flare ups without medication. If it was ever really severe in the future I might consider it but so far I’ve not needed it
@AdamLeonard94 yeah same!
I wouldn’t say better and I do take medication. But after 35 years I have learned that when I can harness my OCD for my betterment it is my super power. Granted I still have my moments. But, an elder told me that perfectionism isn’t a bad thing when kept in check. So, I try . . . and go to therapy. Hope this helps.
@SachaBJ i will, thank you!
I take just a regular anxiety medication. Not one that Dr’s prescribe people with OCD. So although it’s helpful for my general anxiety it doesn’t help with my OCD thoughts or feelings of panic when I get flare ups. What really helped me the most is my ERP therapy. I believe that it really depends on the person and what their doctor thinks would be best for them. I did some research and spoke to my therapist about medication and he said I’m responding so well to my treatment that I don’t need to swap my medication. So for me yes you can get better without medication but I feel like it can be harder. If that makes sense
@nanchrach it does, thank you! 💗
I am wanting to go to therapy to hopefully lower my OCD symptoms but I am terrified to tell anyone else, like a therapist, about my intrusive thoughts. Has anyone else had this experience and if so how did you get over it?
Those of you who have overcome at least a bit, if not all, of your OCD. When you went through the CBT and ERP, did it feel like the end of the world? And how did you face the fact that your fears and uncertainties might actually come to life?
Hey friends, I hope you all are well. I just wanted to check in and ask people's experiences about being on medication. I have had OCD pretty much my whole life, just got recently diagnosed 4 months ago and my therapist recommended that I get on meds for it so I have a psychiatrist appointment set up. I'm a little apprehensive about getting on them, but I've realized that I do have some sort of chemical imbalance in my brain that plays a part in my OCD and anxiety. I would love to hear anyones experiences or words of encouragement. Thank you, I hope you all are well.
