Luvox stopped working after 10 years. Now what?

I’ve been on Fluvoxamine (LUVOX) since 2015. It has worked wonders for my intrusive thoughts, ever since starting at the lowest dose of 50 MG per day. Over the years I’ve had to gradually increase the dose and for the past year I have been at the max 300 MG per day. Unfortunately, over the past few months, I’ve noticed intrusive thoughts and obsessions coming back. Has anyone else taken Luvox for a long period of time and then had it just stop working? If so, what medication did you try next that seemed to work as well as Luvox?

You’ll have to see your psychiatrist and tell them all this. They know you better than random people online that are also not doctors.

It isn’t unheard of for drugs to diminish over time. It’s actually expected. That’s going to happen, for example, with my Adderall.

I was on Celexa for 15 years. It worked well enough that I didn’t even know I had OCD until it stopped working and I developed harm themes. I’m titrating up on Luvox now. Thankful for it along with proper diagnosis and ERP therapy. Hope you find the right thing for you!

Thanks Nica, I was actually originally prescribed Luvox based on my primary doctor, based on research I did on my own time on the internet. I suggested it to him, and he said we could try it. I’m pretty well versed in most SSRIs after dealing with this condition for 4 decades. I mainly just wanted to get other folks opinions that had been on Luvox for long periods of time and what they switched too, if Luvox failed for them. I take any opinions with a grain of salt of course, but I just like to hear other folks real world good/bad experiences when switching meds.

I am currently on Paroxetine, but my doctor wants to switch me to Fluvoxamine. I’m hesitant to switch because I’m afraid it’ll make my intrusive thoughts worse and more anxious.

@alan87 I’ve never taken Paroxetine (Paxil), but I have taken Fluoxetine (Prozac) when I was younger for depression. I notice the one huge advantage of Fluvoxamine (Luvox) is it literally “blankets” the intrusive thoughts immensely. I noticed it working within about 5 days and could really feel the full effects about 2 months later. I never experienced that with Prozac. However, I will say I never noticed Luvox doing much for my depression, but since it calmed my OCD, I did feel “less” depression symptoms.

@Knickatknite When you say it blankets your intrusive thoughts does that mean you don’t have them or you don’t notice them?

@alan87 Exactly. It’s like a blanket of “calmness” comes over them. Some of my intrusive thoughts disappeared completely, others just seem more in the back of my mind and I can put them off. Sadly, after 10 years, that effect seems to be wearing off.

@Knickatknite I’m sorry to hear that. I feel the same way with Paroxetine, I could feel everything be under the surface, and not feeling like the anxiety was going to explode. Now it feels like it’s closer to the surface. If that makes sense.

@alan87 100% makes sense. My doctor is actually having me try adding 5 mg of Abilify(Aripiprazole) daily to my 300 MG of Luvox. Apparently it gives the Luvox a bit of a “boost”. I’ve read on here it’s worked for others. If it doesn’t do anything, we plan to do a cross-taper switch to either Lexapro or Prozac.

Medication

I’m working with a new psychiatrist for medication. She suggested both prozac or luvox. wondering what has worked for people or any suggestions

Luvox + Buspar

Has anyone else taken Luvox? How long did it take to work? I'm on day 26 or 27 and I am not feeling better. I almost feel like I've been worse. my psych says it takes time and I'm likely not worse, just need time for it to adjust but im scared. Ive been taking 75mg because we went from 25 to 50 to 100 and that seemed like too much so we went back to 75 and now we are going back to 100. We are also adding Buspar three times a day so hopefully that does something. Idk, I am trying to hold out but yesterday was so bad, I thought I was going to have to go to the hospital or inpatient care somewhere.
