Anyone with an ocd therapist?

I’ve been considering scheduling a call with a specialist. Just want to know if and how it has helped others that have worked with a specialist. I have a fear of family doctors as they have put me in some terrible situations in the past with misdiagnoses and medications that I reacted very badly to and I would like to get a real therapist that specializes in ocd because I get the feeling family doctors don’t know much about this. No matter how hard they present themselves as knowledgeable about the subject it feels like they are just pushing prescriptions on me and making guesses. Just wanted to get a general idea of what I would be getting myself into with a specialist.

Hello friend! I totally get feeling nervous about the process of finding the right fit. I saw three different therapists and my general practitioner (no help at all!) before finally finding my "match" in an ERP specialist at NOCD. I would encourage you to actually tell your therapist exactly what you've written here. It's important they know your history with care, so they can work to better that experience for you. With an OCD specialist, you’d come up with a hierarchy of your obsessions and compulsions, and try to work on them through ERP. You’d have appointments, as well as be able to message them through the app. I went to doctors who thought I just had a behavioral problem. I have a psychiatrist who has me on meds.

I would highly recommend the online therapists on this site. I am seeing a therapist here and have been since summer 2022. I would also recommend having a normal therapist that you can talk to about day to day life stuff and non OCD related things as NOCD therapists are more focused on building ERP skills.

@MintyMLP I’ve also been seeing a therapist on here since last summer. I also see a psychiatrist who treats OCD and depression using meds.

I cannot recommend getting a therapist who specializes in OCD enough! I had a therapist before who did not and while she was nice, she didn’t have the tools or knowledge to help me help myself. Give NOCD a call, I’m so so glad I did!

I’ll ditto what others have said here, getting the support of an ERP specialist (I did it through NOCD) was absolutely crucial for my recovery! I had seen plenty of talk therapists who couldn’t really help me because they didn’t know how to identify the symptoms of OCD and weren’t trained in the specific modality (ERP) that’s most effective for it. Hi, this is my first time posting here, though I have been looking at the app for support for a while already. I have pretty bad social anxiety which unfortunately extends to even being in forums online as well, so I have been putting off sharing on here. I am in my early 40s and have struggled with OCD in various forms since I was a child. In my mid-teens it exploded into very tormenting Pure O. It is complicated by some comorbidity with other diagnoses — social and generalized anxiety, depression, and CPTSD. The sad thing is that I’ve actually experienced so much harm over the years at the hands of uneducated mental health professionals who didn’t have a clue about OCD or how to work with it, and i feel like I carry this extra burden of shame and trauma from those bad experiences on top of the grueling daily struggle I have with my mental health diagnoses. I am set up to have an initial consultation appointment soon with a therapist who is a psychologist in private practice. They seem kind and very knowledgeable, and so I am very hopeful that we will be a good fit for working together. But I am still haunted by those past bad experiences, and so the whole process of starting with someone new is nerve wracking. Has anyone else had bad experiences with therapists who didn’t understand OCD or who had only a superficial understanding of it? Thanks for reading!

When and how did you first discover you may have OCD? I'm beginning to think OCD is one of the most understudied, misunderstood mental health issues ever. I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder about 6 years ago after I started suffering from panic attacks, but only just recently discovered my condition could be much more specific than that. I've been suffering from intrusive thoughts and complusions since I was a teenager with a variety of themes. And honestly this app and amazing community has opened my eyes to it. I'm curious if anyone else has had an experience like mine where they were just thrown into the general diagnosis category of just having anxiety and/or depression and is only just now coming to terms with having OCD? What has been your experience with the therapists on this app? I'm using another popular, pricey app for talk therapy at the moment, but so far 4 therapists have ghosted me on it so my confidence is feeling pretty shot. Has talk therapy and working with a therapist on here been successful for you?

Hello I am looking to start ERP on here with a therapist. I am quite nervous about it incase it doesn't work, I've had BWRT Therapy, CBT privately for months and I'm still horrified and scared of these thoughts. I haven't been officially diagnosed either which leads me down a horrible thought path.. but every therapist I have seen has said I have got harm ocd/pure o. Any advice on starting ERP? Thank you
