I know that sounds a bit harsh, but people with OCD think very differently then everyone else and we do strange things. I used to think OCD was just that we overthink to much and have compulsions to fix it, but its kinda alot more than that i realise. Like peoples lives are legit debilitated from this thing. Thats serious and i dont think others realise that. Mabye im concerned too much idk.
In terms of ADA, mental health issues are definitely be considered a disability if they are interfering with your ability to get stuff done. I don't love the word "disability", because ability is a spectrum and it varies for everyone throughout their lives. I think a better question is, do I need help, and do I qualify for certain types of help? (like work accomodations).
Saying that we are "disabled" is quite a harsh and broad term. What does it mean to be disabled? To be completely unable to do something under any circumstance, or to do something differently for example? Or needing help sometimes? Let’s accept that things “aren’t easy for us.” But that’s true for thousands of other groups of people too — for example, drug users. Those with social phobias. The anxious, the borderline, etc. If we add up all these labels, does the total amount to the entirety of humanity? Not quite — but maybe yes. In a less philosophical conversation, I’d say that such terms are probably harmful when used in absolute ways, because they "teach us that we can’t." And yet, through therapy, we will shape the conditions both to be able, and to be able to try, and to be able to ask for help when we need it — without falling into roles. Thousands of shades of thousands of people — we’re so different, and yet so much the same.
I want to start off my comment by saying: disability is not a bad word. It is not a negative / bad thing to need extra help, care or support. Adhd is considered a learning disability, I would venture to guess that there are plenty of other people in the nocd community who live with adhd in conjunction with ocd. Speaking from my personal experience: ocd has been debilitating for me in some ways, and not so much in others. I'm not a medical professional, nor a therapist and this is definitely a question for someone who might have better resources. Disability is a spectrum. Some people WILL need more help than others. Some people will need it for the rest of their lives in order to function. That does not make them less than. In my belief, disability will happen to all of us one day and the sooner we accept it the easier it will be to accept that we need the help, no matter what the context is.
I guess disability would be the wrong term for it though apologies. I guess the word im looking for is just a general dissadvantage added onto your life. And sure we can control it but it can be hard. Mabue im just being sulky or something idk. I need Gods grace rn OCD do get bad sometimes.
@I_am_kiwi_08 Hey! OCD can be considered a disability. Severe and extreme ocd is considered that and it is in fact recognized as one. Neurodivergent conditions like this are generally considered mental disabilities. I have ocd, bipolar, adhd and autism so that makes me mentally disabled because my brain doesn’t work “typically” so I ask for accommodations so I can at least function in a society that wasn’t primarily built for people who struggle mentally + I do not want you to view the word as one that is negative or only validated when the disability is physical seen, the word is one that lets others know that we deserve accommodations and this accommodations are not unfair privileges!
In short, yes! A majority of us with ocd are disabled
It is recognized as a disability. I even saw online about a reserve that lets people with ocd, adhd, autism, bipolar, down syndrome and so many more mental disabilities in for free+ many countries recognize it as such but sometimes individuals in the society may be dismissive
That’s kinda my question. All my thoughts feel so realistic and so now I doubt if they are ocd and if I just can’t make my mind up about something and I’m using ocd as an excuse or something idc I feel like this post is word vomit.

Does anyone struggle with feeling like their ocd issues are not ocd enough compared to other peoples ocd? Is this an ocd thought itself lol
