anxiety attack when moving into freshman dorm
I moved into my nyc freshman dorm yesterday, which should’ve been a good feeling since nyc has my dream, and after my parents left early because of an argument with me, I felt uneasy pretty much the rest of the night. My roommates are both girls and already know each other and friends with other people. I have one friend that I don’t know very well at all but they went to a school my school’s show choir group competed against and went to a show choir camp with me the summer before my senior year. But they are a different major and in a different room than me, so seeing them often will be rare. But I felt so alone and scared. My roommates are nice for the most part, but since I don’t know them, we barely spoke to each other and they had gone to another person’s dorm down the hall and hung out there for a while. I called friends and told them what was happening, not talking bad about my roommates because obviously they didn’t do anything wrong or not invite me out of malice. But after my call with them, I somewhat had a feeling that an anxiety attack was coming on, and started texting my friend who I bond with over having ocd (he deals with sexuality ocd but he’s straight, I deal with gender identity ocd as I’m transgender). I didn’t tell him anything besides I feel like my ocd is getting bad and kind of playing it off as a joke when I told him the situation with my roommates. He was being reassuring, but I couldn’t get it into my brain. The anxiety attack started to happen with some hyperventilation and tearing up, so I put a comfort show on to help. But then it started to get worse anyway. It was brief and I tried to calm myself down afterwards, but I still felt like garbage. Then these random guys on my floor knocked on my door and said that they’re just bored and wanting to meet other people, so I let them in and gave them a tour of my room. They complimented my stuff and we had a good conversation. Turns out two of them share my major. After they left, I felt better. My roommates came back some time after, and around 1am (we were all still up) they decided to go back to the person’s dorm they came from because they said they couldn’t sleep. They didn’t come back after that, they didn’t say bye either. I was alone in my dorm and tried to keep myself from being anxious all over again so I can sleep. There were times when I would wake up 30 minutes after falling asleep, and another time I woke up 2 hours after falling asleep again. The next day, a resident life staff member came to our dorm room around 9am or 10am to tell me about the housing mixup and that they’re moving me to another room in another residence hall. This random girl texted me two days ago asking to switch rooms with me because she knew my two roommates, and I said yes because I didn’t know them too well, so I guess I was moving either way. But my said roommates had a honors student event this morning, and I’ve been alone in here for a few hours repacking my stuff to move into another dorm room before my own student workshop session in a 2 hours. But I had another minor anxiety attack and I’m scared they’re going to keep happening stronger and more often. I never felt this bad in a way that I felt like I was dying and helpless. It’s been bad before but now it’s like the weight of the world is on my chest, and I’m trying my hardest to stay afloat. I’m going from feeling neutral/okay to being anxious and then feeling numb. I’m not sure what to do besides looking into the NOCD free call thing to get an official diagnosis and possibly medicated. Thanks for reading all of this if you did :)
