why did I have a dream where I basically cheated on my boyfriend???? what I can remember of the dream was there was some random guy (No one who I know he was just random) and me and him were "testing things" like hanging out and we were kissing and stuff???? and then I went through a grocery registration line and my mom was there and looked at me a certain way when I kissed the guy as to be like "you know you have a boyfriend what the hell" and then after I told the guy "hey maybe we shoukd stop doing this I don't think it will work out" and then I don't remember anything else I kinda woke up feeling super guilty. I don't even know why I had this dream I have never wanted to cheat on my boyfriend or had a desire to be with another man like that why did this happen. what do I do. I feel like in some way I'm being unfaithful by having that dream. even if im.nkt I'm worried the dream may mean something about me or my relationship. please someone give insighf

I had a dream the other day I went to the moon. And one I could breath under water. And one I was being tracked by a wild animal. Dreams put us in all kinds of situations we wouldn’t normally be in. You know that. Your mind combined a bunch of random images and thoughts and made a narrative. Plus, you have ocd. Any chance your theme is about your relationship? If so, you probably spend all your time obsessing over these things. It would make sense that it shows up in your dreams too.

thank you. I know you're right it's just hard not to think it means something when I do have rocd and also my relationship is going through hardships and has been for a while. I am really trying to keep my head screwed on straight with this and not obsess too much. Yesterday I had a dream where I broke up with my boyfriend but the circumstances of our existence were skewed and entirely different than real life. I talked to my bf about it and he didn't raise any concerns he may have had, he just comforted me. I want to talk to him about this too but I don't want to keep confessing to guilt if there really isnt anything bad happening. It's just two nights in a row really worry me. But your insight really helps, thank you so much

@stxrmads If confessing is one of your compulsions you have to stop. It may provide some kind of temporary relief but it’s only making your ocd worse by feeding your obsessions.

@pureolife I have confessed when having a feeling of guilt before, but im not sure if it's a compulsion. I have confessed when it was something I felt he needed to know and didn't know if it was really a bad situation or not. I can't tell if this act is driven by OCD or not. in my head it's because I want everything out in the open so there isn't any secrecy because that's related to some other issues we are having in our relationship and those other things he agreed with being something that he would've wanted to know, and they would be things I'd want to know if the roles were reversed. I think if I confess this though it may be driven by OCD. hearing him acknowledge and understand that the dream isn't my fault would be the ultimate reassurance for sure, but at the same time I really don't feel comfortable woth him not knowing. I feel very lost overall.

@stxrmads No healthy relationship should have a rule about disclosing all uncomfortable dreams. We don’t control our dreams and we can’t be held accountable for them. What we can be held accountable for is our actions. If you’ve decided certain actions are not allowed within the relationship and you break that promise, of course you should admit to that and take responsibility. But you cannot take responsibility for a dream.

@pureolife I agree and neither of us believe that we have to tell each other about them, it's that I personally feel bad about it. he asked this morning if I had another bad dream and I said yeah and he comforted me and didn't even ask what it was about or anything, he knows I'll tell him or he'll ask respectfully if he gets curious. It's just hard to figure oit if something is really a compulsion or not sometimes.

@stxrmads If someone else came to you with that exact description, what advice would you give them? To me, it’s very clear that confessing this dream is a compulsion and I’d urge you to sit with that discomfort and let it subside on its own rather than performing compulsions (like confessing to him or even getting reassurance here that this is the “right” thing to do.) feel guilty. Feel the need to do compulsions to stop that feeling. And choose to resist.

I will sit with this discomfort and try my best to not let the anxiety or guilt get me to a point where I feel the need to talk to my partner about it for reassurance. thank you so much 🫶

Commonly dreams where it paints you as a cheater, reflect in unmet, needs not sexually, but rather the sort where you’re wanting him to notice you to help you emotionally to understand and support you to lead you or provide in a way that helps you develop with mental and emotional growth and healing and the mark is being missed just a little

Intrusive thoughts can manifest in your dreams too. If they happen when you’re awake then they can certainly happen when you’re asleep. You’ve probably had nightmares before that you didn’t want, right? So why would you want these thoughts in your dreams either? I get your concerns though.

Dreams

I am straight but i had a dream about kissing a dude, i have been recovering for a while and i know im almost there, but i didn’t necessarily feel anything when dreaming about it. It was basically a dream being created by an intrusive thought i been having. It took me a hot minute to come to the conclusion that i was kissing a dude and it is unusual, so i was in that dream for a second. Im not too bothered by it, but id like some advice and opinions, thanks :)

I need advice

I've been dating my girlfriend for 4 months now. I know that I want to be with her and that no one else compares. We are currently doing long distance but will be together in a couple of months. I have multiple intrusive thoughts about finding others attractive or liking the attention other give me. At first I was okay with this because I knew that that i wasn't going to pursue anyone over these feelings. A classmate of mine, began sitting with me at lunch and everytime we talk I get thoughts. Comparing my partner to her or admiring her. Yesterday, they were constantly appearing. I wanted to run away from her because of all the thoughts I was having. I felt pretty sick and then thought of a moment where I "flirted" with her. I began to feel guilty even though I knew that I have absolutely no intentions of being with this person whatsoever. But I continued to think about this moment, I said I'd never do something like that again and moved on. But in the afternoon on the way to the store with my mom, I was looking out the car window. Im not sure why, but a part of me feels like I was doing it because I was curious of what attractive people I would see. Then this guy drives past and gives look of checking us out. I gave that look back. But I immediately felt guilt because I flirted back. And it felt like I was looking for people to pursue. I know that I do not want to cheat or betray my girlfriend, but in that moment I felt like that way the reason for me looking out the window. I'm not sure what to do.
