I stared Prozac back in 2017. Made me very sleepy and caused sexual side effects too. It did wonders for my OCD though. So much that I decided I was doing a lot better and didn't need it. This was back in January of this year. Withdrawals weren't too bad. Most likely because of how long Prozac stays in your system. Fast forward to April and my OCD came back full force. My OCD is so severe that I started to take Prozac again. Takes about 2 months to see any real possitive effects. However this time I'm combining medication with therapy.
That sounds similar to my Adderall that I was taking since 4th grade. I guess I got diagnosed with ADD and that stimulant helped neutralize my OCD but once it wore off I was anxious and irritable and it definitely had some negative side effects
@boilerup Are you currently taking anything?
Did it work the same this time? With same side effects? What made you decide to add therapy as well?
@Jb89 Not at the moment. I’ve got a call scheduled with NOCD to see about therapy and then I’m gonna do an online Dr. visit soon w a psychiatrist. I’ve been fearful of getting in medicine but I think it’s time I do.
@boilerup I have been thinking about doing online doctors as well like wellnite or a few others.
@kls323 Yes. Depending on your insurance, you can get online calls through Dr. on Demand or other wellness services for cheap. Again, depending on the insurance
@boilerup That's great
I'm not on anything but want to be. Are you or have you been on a anything?
I’m not. I plan to have an online Dr. visit today and wanted to get a feel for what’s out there and what may be best for me
I was prescribed Effexor but have it sitting here and never touched it due to everything I read about withdrawal symptoms. I meeting with my doctor tomorrow to figure a different one to start.
That's one reason I'm scared to take anything. All the reviews on all these side effects and withdrawls on antidepressants are scary.
@kls323 I totally get it.. trust me I can’t tell you how many times I almost started it but after a 5 sec google search on that specific medicine.. the comments on the withdrawal are unreal. I think whatever I’m prescribed next I’m just not gonna google.. that’s where our problem is.. we gotta just role with it and know the pros outweigh the cons
@CoreyC You are so right. That's always been my problem. I research EVERYTHING until it drives me crazy. Lol
@kls323 Researching sucks lol my mind tells me “ok..look this medicine up and see how it helped other people.. or does anyone use this med for my thoughts (or whatever)” but in the end you end up finding something worse out and it scares you from even trying. As I’m trying to recover from all of this I’m trying to really take a step back from looking stuff up (anything) and just go with it
@CoreyC I agree. I am trying the same.
@CoreyC At this point..the side effects and withdraw symptoms might be better than the OCD
i’m on fluoxetine - 10mg did very little but i had a lot of start up anxiety. 20mg made the anxiety worse, send my heart rate skyrocketing and now i have a little trouble sleeping/weird dreams but all of that seems to be settling down? i have a few chronic illnesses so it’s hard to tell aha
How long have you been on it?
@CoreyC i’ve been on 20mg for about 2 weeks and i was on 10mg for almost 2 monthd
I’m on Sertraline 250 mg and Abilify 7 mg. They’re both really helpful to me and have been worth any side effects. I’m the kind of person who’s probably going to be on medication my whole life though. I’ve been on various medications since I was 4.
Just started taking it again less than 2 weeks. First week I started at only 5mg. Currently now on 10mg. Will up the dose after two weeks on 10mg. It's just gradually upping the does to reduce side effects. So far the only side effect is some loss of appetite. It's also hasn't improved my OCD and probably won't until I reached 40mg. Usually higher doses are needed for OCD. Also, I'm doing therapy because while medication might help you, it doesn't teach you how to deal with it. In fact, therapy was my first choice but, I quickly realized that my OCD was too severe to do therapy alone. If you're OCD is less severe, I'd look into therapy first.
Thank you
Anybody here on medication for their OCD? I know everyone’s experience is different, and different medications work differently for different people, but I’m just trying to get a pulse on what to expect. I’m seeing a psychiatrist soon and I’m hoping to get some meds going.
Anyone taking medication that is not Abilify or Prozac and if so how many milligrams are you taking how effective was it for your OCD?
I’m on and off with my OCD. It feels all too real at times, and nonexistent at others. I’m heavily considering going medication as i feel it may be what I need to breakthrough this spell. What is your alls experiences with meds and what did you take? Please share all the good, bad and in-between!
