I’ve been in the marine corp for 4 years and recently got out came back home and my brother is struggling with ocd and I feel like I am at fault for the change to his environment and my mother says that it’s been happening for a year now and that he has gotten worse recently but won’t accept help how do I convince him to seek help
That’s tough. I would think he would want help. Is there any kind of help he has accepted in the past?
@anonocd No I’m the past he struggled with I guess obsessing over the way he looked and everyone thought that it was just his personality and character always wanting to look jacked but now it’s been an obsession with being clean and wanting everything around him clean he spent an hour this morning walking from the kitchen to wash his hands and going to the restroom and washing his hands just back and forth and he even says it himself that he wasn’t like this 6 months ago that it’s “his mind playing tricks” because he feels dirty even when he gets out of the shower. It’s new to him too I just don’t know how to convince him to seek help.
Maybe you can try and ERP with him, then show him how to do it himself, and tell him therapy has erp with someone to do them with you. It might help him think of therapy in a different light.
I’m positive I have OCD I don’t think get too many compulsions but the obsessions are what mess with me. I’ve recently started medication for depression that is as a side effects supposed to treat ocd but I’m not noticing anything with the symptoms. Also who do I go to to try to get an actual diagnosis?
Hi everyone, I’m Cayla. I’m a mom that’s lived with OCD since childhood, but my breaking point came more recently after having my son. I was consumed by terrifying thoughts—What if I hurt him? What if I did something awful without realizing it? I was so afraid of my own mind that I couldn’t be alone with him. The shame and exhaustion were unbearable, and I convinced myself I was broken. In 2024, I finally sought help. ERP therapy at NOCD was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but it saved my life. Even now, I have tough days, but I know I don’t have to be ruled by OCD. When my 12 year old daughter began showing signs of OCD, I felt overwhelmed with guilt. I never wanted her to go through what I had, but I knew what to do. I told her that I have OCD too and made sure she knew it wasn’t her fault—and that she wasn’t alone. One of the hardest parts of this journey was trusting someone else with my daughter’s OCD. I knew how vulnerable it feels to share intrusive thoughts, and I wanted her to feel safe. Her NOCD therapist was able to establish trust and genuine empathy from the start, and that relationship gave her the confidence to face ERP head-on. Seeing her build that trust made me certain she was in the right hands. ERP has helped both of us reclaim our lives, and it is beautiful to see my daughter managing her condition and making visible progress. Parenting with OCD while raising a child with OCD isn’t talked about enough, but I know so many parents are struggling with these same challenges. How to know if you actually have it or if I’m just making up the symptoms? I have a lot of intrusive thoughts constantly and even have a “theme” but it really surged after I search up what I was experiencing, but then again I search up a lot of what I experience and constantly have to recheck things. My parents say I’m normal but I know I’m not, (both of my siblings have adhd) I find it immensely hard to focus from turning 17-18. Please let me know what you think l! Thanks!
