Genesight test

I am really curious to try the GeneSight test because I think that it would help me understand what medication will work better for me. I spoke with multiple different people about this, and it was brought to my attention by my hairstylist and my therapist. They both think it would be really good for me, and I’m willing to try it if my insurance will cover it. I then texted my psychiatrist and she seemed very unsure about the testing. Part of me thinks that she just wants more money so she is not willing to help me find what medication works best for me, the other part of me wonders if it is not a good idea and a waste of money to do the testing. I want to see the best in my psychiatrist, but she tends to not listen to me anyways, so I don’t really have a reason to listen to her in this situation. I’m curious to know if anybody else has tried the Genesight testing and how it worked for you. Or if you have medication recommendations? I know that is more tricky, because it’s different for everyone.

I just took the Genesight test, and am going to discuss with it my psychiatrist. I am going to give a different recommendation though....get a new psychiatrist, it might just be my own trauma speaking. But there is nothing worse than a doctor (especially one for mental health) That won't listen to you. Do what you feel is best for you. Genesight is usually especially recommended for those that have had trouble finding the right medication. Hope this helps. 🩵

@Thatoneunhingedfae Thank you, it really does. I often feel that she doesn’t listen and that is frustrating so I am definitely considering seeking a new one, this was just the only one that took my insurance. I’m hoping that by now they have someone else. I appreciate this!!

I just did it because I was tired of playing medication roulette. Turns out 2 of the 3 medications I was on ended up not being compatible with my genetic makeup. I can only take 8 different antidepressants which made it a bit easier to choose from. Feel free to ask me any other questions 🙂

@Surviving:( Very helpful!!! Thank you!!! Another question, from your experience, are you on any of the medicines that ended up being a green light, and how are you doing on those? If you don’t mind me asking, no pressure to share.

@Anonymous Yes, I am currently on Zoloft and klonopin for sleep. The Zoloft has taken a bit of time to adjust to and my anxiety was a bit worse the first week. Now I feel as though it’s starting to work but I’m still adjusting. I’m 2 weeks into them. I up my dosage on Wednesday.

@Surviving:( So I was on Zoloft (still am but thinking of coming off of it) but it like made me physically sick when I first got on it because my anxiety was so bad. I think it might be a yellow one for me😅 it has gotten. ALOT better but my cycle has been GREATLY affected by it so it has made me reconsider staying on it. Klonopin I’ve heard a lot about, curious to see if that is something I could look into. I have bad insomnia due to the anxiety and nightmares.

@Anonymous I agree. My provider initially wanted to start me on ambien but I have a history of sleep walking while on it so I said no to that one. I was also started on Wellbutrin which is in the green for me but it made me have awful side effects and made my ocd thoughts worse.

I did this test after being in cymbalta for over a year, and abilify for a few months. I felt like the cymbalta just wasn't helping me enough, it was working some but not like what I thought it was supposed to, and abilify started causing me hand tremors. My Dr was the one who actually suggested it and I never heard of it before, and cymbalta was labeled in the red (not good for you at all) and abilify in the yellow (could work or could be bad). Since that test, I've been on lamictal and it's honestly the best thing I've ever done. Obviously it isn't a miracle thing that makes you "normal" but it definitely made me feel 100x better than Ive ever felt before. I 100% recommend taking the rest and I really don't know your therapist would disagree, especially because it's designed to look into YOUR genetics to find the best medicinal match for YOU. I did it and found moderate MTHFR gene mutations that affected one or two classes of meds. I started taking folate at the behest of my prescriber to help the methylfolation process along. I'm not sure if that's made a true difference since I've changed several meds around since I did the Genesight test.

I did it! It was cool and honestly so easy they just mail you the kit and you swab your mouth and sent it out to the lab. My primary care ordered it for me and then had to sign up for something on her end to get my results. When you get it back you get a list of green meds, yellow meds and red meds. Green should work well with your genes red could have a significant interaction. However i did try some on my green list and i had bad side effects and im currently on one from my red list and have no side effects at all lol so idk how accurate it is but def would be worth it

My therapist recently suggested beginning medication for my GAD/OCD. I am curious and open to the idea, but I think I’m more concerned about what will happen to me negatively. I have this thought that I have no ‘self’, and if I were to take medication, I feel that I’m going to change drastically. Can anyone speak to how medication has impacted them? I don’t know anyone who has used medication (that I know of) and this is the once place I feel comfortable asking for stories. Thank you.

What has been your experience with Lexapro or Zoloft? My therapist mentioned how potentially taking one of these could be helpful but I’m hesitant on medications.

Anybody here on medication for their OCD? I know everyone’s experience is different, and different medications work differently for different people, but I’m just trying to get a pulse on what to expect. I’m seeing a psychiatrist soon and I’m hoping to get some meds going.
