Finally, I was formally diagnosed :)

I finally got my OCD confirmed a few minutes ago. I have severe OCD. I feel relief but at the same time I feel so scared because all of this feels much more real. My mom isn’t the most open minded so I could only tell her very little about my ocd, just scared of people dying is what I said. I can’t tell her about the harm ocd, the pocd, or anything else. I feel like I’m lying to my family by keeping all that from them. I haven’t been able to stop crying. I finally have a diagnosis :)

I find if there is one person I can tell everything to that is ok… sometimes that’s enough. It’s good to have a confirmation.. I’m happy for you 😊

I’m so happy for you I don’t know you but I’m super happy. I feel as if I’m in the same situation as you, could you go through what you told them? My mums so not open minded haha

@Sofie_mmm I mentioned possibly having ocd to my therapist who then evaluated me and confirmed it. I called my mom and told her I was experiencing just anxiety it was OCD, she kept asking me what that meant and what my thoughts were. This made me freak out a bit honestly bc confessing a huge compulsion of mine and I knew she wouldn’t understand all of it. I told her that I’m afraid of people I love dying. Sometimes I get vivid thoughts of it happening because I’m so scared of it. I told her sometimes I get the thought hey I could hurt someone and it scares me into obsessing over it because it’s the last thing I want, to hurt someone. That’s really all I told her. I also mentioned how she shouldn’t ask me about my thoughts because that will make me worse. I told her reassurance also hinders my recovery. She thought it was a lot but yeah that was all I could tell her.

You are not lying by not telling your family about all your subtypes and intrusions. You suffer from OCD - not your family - and you habe to look out for what's best for you regarding your mental health. If you want to tell someone and how much you tell someone is totally up to you.

I’m thankful you got a diagnosis - knowledge is power! My mom is super duper religious and thought I was possessed when I was first diagnosed (harm, suicidal subtypes). I actually got her to read Overcoming Harm OCD by Jon Hershfield (yes, I had to check the spelling of his name 3 times, because well, OCD). I read that book in two days and it explained EVERY SINGLE THING I was going through and has helped my mom understand much better as well.

I'm officially diagnosed

So, as of one hour ago today I am officially diagnosed with severe contamination ocd. I don't know how to process this, my moms crying, my therapist is moving to Uruguay and won't be able to continue our therapy, what in actual hell do I do. What am I doing. I don't know how to process this. The issue isn't just that I have it- it's that it's severe, not mild, not moderate, permanent. Incurable. I want a cure so bad, I want a magical pill to make it go away and it simply does not exist. Feel free to message me eith advice for newly diagnosed ocd'ers, I definitely could use it. opening up to family

I was super recently diagnosed with OCD and nervous to share my diagnosis with my family. I’m a somewhat messy person and don’t have germophobic tendencies, so since I don’t have the stereotypical OCD presentation I was terrified that nobody would believe me. I ended up talking to my mom and making a silly TikTok post about it, which my grandma saw. Not only did they believe and support me–I learned that my grandma has it too! Funny to look back on, but really cool to see that the worst outcome doesn’t always happen. (:
