hey y’all. my therapist recommended meds for my OCD. what are anyone’s experiences w medication?
here to follow along , also considering meds
@ashcash did your therapist suggest it
@moiraskalak sorta a combo of me feeling like im outta options and the therapist thinking meds could help
Paxil worked the best for me. It didn’t take away OCD completely, but it reduced obsessions and increased positive mood. However, going off of it was awful. Prozac I had zero side effects on, but didn’t notice much difference. I tried other medications but I didn’t notice much help on them. It’s all a matter of trying what works best for you, and either way, stick to ERP! ❤️
@Madison the ERP Ninja 1. what is erp 2. im scared i’ll become dependent on meds. what are your thoughts
@moiraskalak Exposure and Response Prevention therapy. It is the gold standard treatment for OCD and changed my life and helped me reclaim my life from OCD. ❤️ You can always wean off with the help of your psychiatrist, but if you’re truly uncomfortable with the idea, know that there IS hope outside of meds (therapy and lifestyle changes). But it’s always worth a shot. You deserve to feel better. You don’t HAVE to be on meds forever if you don’t want to. View it as like a crutch while you learn to manage OCD on your own (via therapy, etc)
@moiraskalak The fear of being dependent on meds is valid. I've never taken them but I feel they're there just to help you get through therapy and make life a bit easier and manageable. Definitely OK for a life line if you're really struggling. Most therapists prescribe them in hope to taper you off later as they don't want you dependant either. From what I've seen, serotonin boosters seem to help you use the part of the brain that ocd sufferers struggle to use under stress. (brains can repair themselves by the way so don't worry about that)
I'm on Zoloft and it has helped me.
I’m looking into Ketamine.
Trintellix has been the best antidepressant for me so far, I’ve gone through most of the SSRI’s and found them lacking. Some bad side effects, Trintellix is an antidepressant as well except not an ssri, it hits other receptors in the brain that ssri’s are not hitting. I am more calm than I’ve ever been on this med, it helped my depression and ocd instrusjve thoughts a ton, limited side effects , I can think clearly again, no sexual side effects, in fact most report it gives you more of a drive and I have to agree. The only drawback is cost. If you don’t have insurance it can be costly, even my copay with insurance is $50 for this med. it’s on patent until 2027 so that means until then the cost won’t come down because there will be no generic formula on this. You may try contacting the pharmaceutical company directly and see if they can help with cost. It’s been a game changer for me and a lot more people are finding out how well this works for some people with ocd.
Hey friends, I hope you all are well. I just wanted to check in and ask people's experiences about being on medication. I have had OCD pretty much my whole life, just got recently diagnosed 4 months ago and my therapist recommended that I get on meds for it so I have a psychiatrist appointment set up. I'm a little apprehensive about getting on them, but I've realized that I do have some sort of chemical imbalance in my brain that plays a part in my OCD and anxiety. I would love to hear anyones experiences or words of encouragement. Thank you, I hope you all are well.
Medication for OCD? Hello all, 19 male here, this seems like a cool community that isn’t nearly as triggering as reddit. I have pretty severe bouts of existential thinking or fear of going crazy ( psychosis ) after some pretty heavy mushroom trips a few years ago, I know logically I should be fine but I do know what it’s like to lose it and it’s scary. Currently I deal with relationship focused OCD, it’s all day from before I even open my eyes. I want things to work out with my girlfriend badly. Also I can come close to a panic attack sometimes which perpetuates everything. Anyway, I mention the fear of going crazy because the way my anxiety/derealization makes me feel is that I’m not mentally stable cause I feel out of it or unreal. I saw that a lot of anxiety and depression medication can cause psychosis and I feel like I could use some help in getting ahead of my OCD because the compulsions are had not to give into when I’m in such distress/not knowing. Plus overall I just feel like I have no idea how I feel about close to anything. Anyone relate about that ?
I just got diagnosed with ocd and she suggested I think about taking lexapro for it. Has anybody tried that and does it help at all?
