Coping with my sick cat and fear of rabies amidst my PTSD struggles.

My day just keeps getting worse

My beloved cat of 6 years is extremely sick, i adopted him when i was in the army and hes always helped me get through my PTSD. After about 1K in vet bills the vet said he likely will not survive this week, and i should consider euthanasia as its most likely advanced pneumonia or heart disease. Hes a indoor only cat and when i was trying to feed him his tooth scratched me and i got a tiny cut. Now my OCD is trying to convince me i somehow got rabies on top of it already going crazy and mourning my cat even though hes still fighting and not yet gone. I feel awful that now im scared to continue caring for him because now im scared of being near him

i’m so sorry about your cat. but don’t let the OCD trick you!! you do not have rabies, because that is not possible from your indoor cat. do not be scared about being near him- he needs you and you need him. just cuddle and let him, because when he is gone you may regret staying away. you are strong!!

I'm so sorry, both for your OCD getting freaked out because of the scratch and for your poor cat. Pets are amazing and the comfort and affection they offer means the world. I wish there something I could say that would make it hurt less when your cat passes, just know that what your cat has done for you and your PTSD, you've done for him as well. You've provided that cat with safety, security, and love for most of his life, and there's nothing that can take away your experiences and memories with him

I am so sorry to hear about your cat. I have a little cat and I would be devastated to go through that. I am so so sorry. THANK you for taking such good care of him in his final moments! THANK you for being there for him as he has for you! THANK you for managing your OCD with the coping skills you've learned so that you can take such good care of your baby! I recently heard from a YouTube channel called "OCD and Anxiety" to replace the "what if" with "even if". So instead of, "what if I get rabies" it turns into "even if I get rabies, I'm still going to care for my cat because I love him and want to be here for him in his last days." And we're not supposed to give reassurance, but I think it's important that you know that you will not get rabies. Release the guilt for having OCD right now. The guilt is counterproductive and you are not responsible for the automatic thoughts that happen to you. You are doing a beautiful thing being with your little kitty and HE LOVES YOU! ♥️

@Mindilini You are absolutely right, i cant let OCD take control especially during this time, i have no patience or energy to fight my ocd, i only want to comfort my cat and make his next days the most wonderful that i can. Your words have touched my heart and genuinely made me watery eyed with love and appreciation from the depths of my soul. Thank you, you are a wonderful human being and a absolute angel on earth, bringing compassion and kindness to a world that severely lacks it. ❤️

Pet Death/Injury intrusive thoughts

Y’all I am so goddamn mentally exhausted it’s incredible. I have a cat, she’s two and in perfect health, but my OCD won’t leave her alone. I’m constantly worried she’ll get crushed under a recliner or die of heat stroke in the dryer. My mom accommodates as much as she can, we keep the dryer shut and we keep a cat bed in the living room so she has a place to hide instead of going under the chair. I’ve never had an animal more than a year or so (hamsters that met tragic ends no matter what I did, and a senior dog that we put down after a year due to declining health) so I think the lack of experience with a pet is a big thing here, and she’s the first animal I’ve ever actually bonded with for real. I just want to make my brain stop describing her possible deaths to me and I can’t figure out how. Anything is appreciated. Thanks for reading, folks.

My cat

This morning while i was eating cereal my cat approached me as always, as i usually give her bits of milk for herself (very small amount, and she doesnt get to drink milk often) but today a thought suddenly popped up that said "what if my cat has rabies and i just dont know" and it made me so paranoid i denied her milk. I can see that it is irrational but it scared me so much, sorry michi.

Please this is urgent

An animal in my county tested positive for rabies in my county last night. I’ve been feeling so weird and all that since getting bit by a cat on the 6th I’m actually gonna end it all if I have it. I can’t do this anymore oh my god
